I recently came across an incredibly mind blowing info-graphic of the popularity of interracial dating in the United States. I'm from the New England, North Eastern part of the country and I know it's pretty accepted, but I had no idea how accepted compared to the rest of the country. The states that made the top twenty were not only surprising to me, but some of them have a downright negative connotation for the way people think of racism. This just showed that the acceptance and commonality of interracial dating is getting to the point where even the states that people think would never be accepting of it are coming around to get with the times.

The number one state is no surprise. California takes the crown and I don't think that shocks anyone. California is always on the cusp of conventionality and makes room for everyone since the state is so ethnically diverse itself. Then after that is when it starts to get more and more surprising. If I had to throw a guess out there number two would have been one of the least friendly states for this, but I guess this just shows how I am exhibiting my own preconceived notions about stereotypes. Texas made the list at second place. The state somewhat famous for their lack of acceptance of other races in the past is apparently changing their ways according to recent polls. This is an incredible shift and just shows how the US is changing with the times.

The most shocking part of all of this information is the appearance of the map. You would think it would mostly be the northeast and the west coast. It is shockingly based on the east, other than California, and almost all of the southern states, excluding New Mexico. This is precisely not at all what I would have expected.

I am very happy that the south of the United States, which so many people think of as being a racist haven which isn't accepting of interracial people or relationships is showing exactly how untrue that is. The funnier, or interesting take on the information also is how the map breaks down the states by political preferences. The split of democratic and republican states is right down the middle at 10 a piece for the top twenty states which is another surprising statistic. You would expect the more liberal states to take most of the spots as they would be more open to anything, but that again is not the case.

Glen and Maggie From Walking Dead: America's Favorite Interracial Couple

For the fans of the AMC television show, The Walking Dead, this last week's episode and season finale was a heart breaker. We saw another main character who has been there since the first season go, but there was an even bigger announcement for those of us who love to love the interracial relationship of Glen and Maggie. They have been an unconventional couple ever since their inception in the second season when the Asian American city dweller met the farm country girl, but they have been inseparable ever since. Last week's episode was especially important for them because Glen decided to take his devotion to Maggie to the next level and ask her father's permission to marry her. Of course, this kind of devotion is praised in a post apocalyptic zombie crazed world, and he agreed.

After receiving the blessing from Maggie's father, he did what any hopeless romantic needing an engagement ring in the world of the living dead would do and found a “walker” with a ring and cut it right off of her hand. Romantic right? Don't worry I'm sure he washed it off, or at least wiped it off first. It was a special day for Glen and Maggie as this Asian and white couple was now solidified officially to hope to one day get married.

I've never been a huge fan of television shows in general, but I must admit this show has me hooked. It is one of the most engaging and entertaining series I have ever watched, and the fact that there is a very unconventional interracial couple at the heart of it makes me love it that much more. It is a manly man's show with killing and action in every episode, but somehow it garners the attention of every man and woman who comes across it on tv. Even though you'd expect them to be more hesitant about featuring such an interracial couple so prominently in such a highly watched show, they don't at all and it makes me incredibly happy to see. All this does is show that the trend we have been discussing for months is still happening. Interracial relationships are still on the rise and the acceptance of them is nothing short of becoming commonplace. This is an amazing trend and makes me, one half of an interracial couple, incredibly happy to see.

Interracial Couples on TV

There is a TV show on right now that is taking the world by storm. Literally every single person who starts watching this show becomes addicted, and ironically enough there is a prominently featured interracial couple as two of the main characters. The show is a new school zombie apocalypse interpretation based off of the comic book series of the same name, “The Walking Dead”. The two main characters are Maggie, a small town, white, farmer's daughter from the country, and Glenn, a Korean American man from the city. During the hustle and bustle of the dawning apocalypse they found each other and became inseparable. The main thing to note is how normal this duo is cast. This just goes to show that interracial relationships as a whole have come such a long way in recent years.

Not only do the characters of Maggie and Glenn kiss on screen, have passionate love scenes, and more than hint at a physical romance between the two, but the whole thing is completely passive. Yes, they are a white woman and an Asian man in a relationship, but nothing is ever even really noted about it. They are simply a couple.

It is very refreshing to have a show so mainstream, so in the public eye feature a couple like this. Most of the relationships on those types of public shows have been almost entirely based in the idea of white couples, or at the largest stretch a black couple. It is very rare to see to different races play such a starring role. The changing times only become further represented by television shows and media. There have been a few of these blog posts lately relating to the ideas portrayed in media on and with interracial couples. It is all connected to show how what is going on in the world always relates back to what is being shown in the media. Just as social trends follow and fade through style and art, the views on relationships are shown through media.

As interracial dating has only become more and more relevant in recent times, the prevalence of the mention of it and the representation of it in media has exploded. Movie stars are in interracial relationships, tv couples are involved with other races and it is no longer even really something out of the ordinary. If you're attracted to people of another race it is normal and perfectly fine to pursue. It is amazing that the world of media accepts this and allows it to be uncensored now.

Interracial Marriage and Human Rights

Over the past few decades huge strides have been made in the acceptance of interracial relationships. Only a few generations in the past, interracial relationships were not only taboo, but illegal. Even though the idea of legalizing love has, and always will be a hot debate issue, there is no telling if that kind of debate will ever fully end. The only thing that is undeniable is that with each growing day, each year and each generation the acceptance of these issues on love are evolving in the right direction. A perfect example of this in the 60s and 70s was race relations and today it is seen in gay marriage. 

The comparison between interracial relationships and gay relationships is similar in the aspect that they are both kinds of love, desires that are uncontrolled, but that some people in the world have a problem with for no real reason. The struggles faced by participants of both groups are affected equally by stereotypes, unaimed hatred, and needless bigotry. The main difference in the two is that while interracial relationships have been reaching a wider acceptance there was no real revolution, no public spectacle made on the behalf of interracial relationships. This is quite the opposite with gay marriage. With the world of social media and internet connectedness we live in today the issue of gay marriage has not only become a huge topic in the world of politics and the realm of lawmaking, but it has had far reaching effects on the people who are too young to vote, or not inspired to be changed by lawmaking. The depths of the exposure of gay marriage has reached a level where it is something everyone can talk about in public one way or another.

With interracial relationships there was never this big “Ah ha” moment. The public never sought out any large opinion on the matter. For this reason, the idea of the acceptance of interracial relationships has been swept under the proverbial rug and never really shown to the public and held on the pedestal of modern media to be something that is endorsed or made popular by the public. In many ways it is the human rights, or social issue that was left behind. 

The fact that interracial relationships have reached the level of acceptance that they have today given the struggles they've faced and considering how far they have come in just the past few years is shocking. From segregated schools and cities only forty years ago, and a war over enslaving one race only a couple hundred years ago the idea that a black man and white woman, or an asian man and black woman can walk down the street hand in hand is a beautiful sight.

Interracial Dating Among Church Goers of Same Race Less Likely to Interracial Date

The debate of whether love is taught or inside us all along has had an interesting addition recently. Church has long been known to be one of the most segregated areas in our modern culture. With churches either being set up for whites or blacks, the insides of these religious institutions on a Sunday morning could easily harken back to a time in the segregated southern United States. There was recently a study done by David Briggs of the Association of Religion Data Archives who found that church goers who attend churches with few members of other races are much less likely to participate in a relationship with a person of another race. 

Although simply a correlation with no real causation, it can be wondered if the association of these two factors means that being raised around people of one race makes you less likely to want an interracial relationship in your own life. It seems like an obvious conclusion to draw, but then that would mean ultimately with the world getting more and more integrated that people will eventually all be open to interracial relationships. The melting pot of the centers of our world are spilling over into the smaller towns, media, and the news in such a way that everyone, everywhere has crushes or thoughts about someone of another race these days in modern society. 

Another interesting aspect to this research was this: in Catholicism, 50% of those who attend church rarely or never, have dated someone of another race, whereas only 25% of those who attend church regularly have dated someone of another race. This shows another instance of the same statistic.

I think the coincidence of less interracial relationships with people who attend mostly segregated churches would most likely only stem from a lack of exposure, and to a much lesser extent bigotry taught from their more elderly relatives, not any aspect of the religion itself. As a matter of fact, it has ben shown in another famous study that those who study the Bible more often are more likely to be open to interracial relationships. Maybe it is simply the social culture of a segregated church environment that contributes to these factors. Religion after all does teach people to love and be open to everyone. 

Celebrity Interracial Dating: Rapper, Eve and her White Boyfriend

It's one thing wanting to pursue an interracial relationship in your private life as a regular, everyday person, and an entirely different thing altogether to want to do that while being one of the most notoriously “hard” and outspoken female rappers. Eve recently opened up about this big change in her life and allowed some questions which were very interesting for anyone that's curious about interracial dating.

One aspect of the whole situation that is worth noting is that this is Eve's first white boyfriend, and this is his first black girlfriend. This means that both of them are new to the interracial dating world and had previously only dated people of their own ethnic backgrounds. This just goes to show how people can't control who they like, who they fall in love with, and who they want to date.

Eve goes into detail about how the public and even her family have given her trouble for deciding to be in a relationship white a white man. It's shocking that in today's world, in 2013, with a black president we still have these kinds of problems with people's own decisions in their private lives. It shouldn't matter to anyone but the two people in the relationship about what they choose to do with their love lives.

One specific comment that was interesting was people saying that he “sold out” from her roots and her hardcore rap days. This is especially disturbing because it goes to how how people are holding her on a pedestal to be judged against their views of her and where they think she should go rather than letting her enjoy her own love life. How low is that?

Eve is putting all of these racial dating stereotypes on blast except for when she made a specific remar about how her white boyfriend is a terrible dancer. I guess that subtle nudge was necessary for an otherwise picture perfect interracial stereotyped couple.

It was good to hear Eve voice that her family is coming to terms and becoming accepting in their own way, even though it took several years. I hope that Eve's relationship being in the public eye will serve to somewhat unite the idea of interracial relationships in the way that they should be. Hopefully, seeing her succeed and be happy will show others that it's ok to pursue love interests no matter what other people think or say. Love is love and doing what you want and what you feel is right should be the only factor.

1 in 12 Marriages in 2012 was an Interracial Couple

Relationships are a natural and beautiful expression of a living being's feelings. Love, laughter, joy, sadness, and anger are inevitable in life. Having someone who is a best friend and a partner throughout it all makes life complete. Everyone is attracted to different types of people. Some people are simply more physically attracted to people of a different race. Evolutionarily, mixed race couples are simply natural and anything that suggests otherwise is overtly racist or outdated. A person is not defined by their skin color, but it is usually the first thing we notice about another person. I am the child of an interracial couple, and I am in an interracial relationship. My mother's parents were an interracial couple as well. It is most literally in my blood. Being an interracial person does not change who I am or what I want, and it did not sentence me to become a person who sought out only people of another race romantically. Although, since there are very few people of the racial combination I am, it did sort of mean I would have to date outside of what I was by blood.
